Was 2014 Any Good?

The Top 10 Films Of 2014 2014 - An End of Year Review by Nathan Brooks 2014 is sooooo last year. 2014 was a great year for movies, so good in fact that my worst list would be made up of only two films, Age of Extinction at number two and Nativity 3 at number one. If I did make a top 10 worst list, It'd be made up mostly of the films that just weren't good enough to make this list, which really says something. Admittedly, I'm not a serious critic by any means, I just like writing reviews about things I've seen or played, so I haven't gone to see every film possible, meaning I've probably stayed away from the truly horrific stuff put out this year. So yeah, if a film isn't on this list, it probably means I didn't see it. Anyway, with that out of the way, lets start the countdown of the Top 10 Films of 2014. Number 10 - The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 Why did they call this 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay? I mean, there's no Hun...

Is Super Smash Bros. For Wii U Any Good?

The Title Says It All Super Smash Bros. For Wii U - Videogame Review by Nathan Brooks Guess who's back Here's a hypothesis for you; "Everybody likes Smash Bros." To test this, you need to go up to someone (prefably someone you know) and ask them if they like Smash Bros. If yes, great, if no, buy Smash Bros. For Wii U (if you don't already own it) and invite this person, and everybody else who said no, to play an 8-player Smash. The answer will almost certainly be yes afterwards. Super Smash Bros. For Wii U is unbelievably fun and not smiling at least once whilst playing is impossible.  Story There is no story. It's Smash Bros., what do you want? Story: N/A Presentation There's very little I can say about the presentation. Are the graphics excellent? Yes. Is the music excellent? Yes. Anything else to add? No.  In other words, it's perfect. Presentation: 10/10 Gameplay The main aim of a game should be to entertain the pl...

A Horrible Christmas Rant

Horrible, Horrible Christmas, In Every Single Sense of the Word Horrible Christmas - A Quick Rant by Nathan Brooks The Good When you expect one thing, and get something else, you can get very angry. You can get so angry that you refuse to acknowledge the positives of what you have got, and just focus on what you haven't got. For example, Agents of SHIELD. I think Agents of SHIELD is great, but unfortunately I don't appear to share that opinion with a lot of other people. Why? Because they're too busy whining about the lack of all the superhero-y stuff they expected and fair enough, considering you are watching a Marvel TV show. However, I've managed to let that initial disappointment go, and I've found I really enjoy this show.  The Bad Horrible Christmas, a Horrible Histories stage production, is the complete opposite of this. As the theme of this post suggests, I expected something great. Horrible Histories is the only children's educatio...

Is Nativity 3: Dude, Where's My Donkey?! Any Good?

Dude, Where's My Funny?! Nativity 3: Dude, Where's My Donkey?! - Film Review by Nathan Brooks Nativity's lack of critical success completely baffles me. I thought Nativity was a great movie. It was funny, it had more depth to it than most comedies and was overall just a fun movie. Nativity 2: Danger in the Manger's lack of critical success, I understand a lot better. I still remember it being fairly entertaining, but I was about 11 then, and I didn't have a brilliant judgement of what makes a good movie. Of what I can remember, however, it was nowhere near as good as Nativity in terms of story and character and basically everything important needed to make a good film. I also remember that they spent most of the movie in a bus. Nativity 3: Dude, Where's My Donkey is proof that the film makers have given up on trying to please the critics. This is an awful film. Nativity 2 was not a brilliant movie, but it at least kept me entertained for however long it...

What Was Good About Doctor Who: Series 8?

The Best of Series 8 Doctor Who: Series 8 - End of Series Review by Nathan Brooks Nobody hates Doctor Who more than Doctor Who fans. Sometimes I feel like the only Doctor Who fan who actually likes the programme. So, whereas most ‘Whovians’ right now would be thinking of another reason to decapitate Steven Moffat, I’m going to look back at what the Doctor Who crew gave us this year and decide what truly shined in series 8. Best Change: The Doctor Oh Nathan, you picked the Doctor as the best change, how original!  Capaldi doing the hand thing. I don't get it either. Okay, hear me out. The Doctor in this series probably had the biggest change he’s ever had since Doctor Who’s 2005 revival. Although each Doctor since Eccleston has all been different, they’ve also all had at least one thing in common. They were, more often than not, nice people. Capaldi on the other hand, is extremely different. A lot of the time he treats the people he’s wo...

Is Hyrule Warriors Any Good?

A LOVE LETTER TO ZELDA FANS, WRITTEN IN SOMEBODY ELSE’S WORDS Hyrule Warriors - Video Game Review by Nathan Brooks Hyrule Warriors is Nintendo’s first attempt at a hybrid. In this case, it’s a hybrid between Koei Tecmo’s Dynasty Warriors series and Nintendo’s very own Legend of Zelda series. Hybrids, obviously, don’t always work and considering how each of these games have quite different gameplay styles (mindless killing vs puzzles and adventure), this was a serious gamble. At the same time, this game is a massive celebration of all things TLOZ and if anything TLOZ related is messed up, Nintendo are in serious trouble. So, does this game work or is it just a mess of two styles that should’ve never tried to get along? Story Even the Triforce has turned up to the party! Compared to other games in TLOZ franchise, the story in Hyrule Warriors isn’t anything spectacular. It lacks the depth of the stories in normal TLOZ games and isn’t anywhere near as interesting. It’s o...
